Noted neurologist Dr Malay Chakraborty on Sunday said that people from the Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) are not aware about brain stroke and 90 out of 100 people of the region have high blood pressure (BP).

Over 200 patients attended a free medical camp conducted by Dr Malay Chakraborty from Siliguri of West Bengal in association with Indian Medical Association (IMA), Kokrajhar and The People’s Aid, a charitable trust. The camp was held in the auditorium hall of Basic Training Centre, Kokrajhar.
Talking to media persons, Dr Chakraborty said that several patients from the BTAD area visit his nursing home at Siliguri for treatment.

“Brain stroke and high BP are serious issues which should not be neglected. I contacted The People’s Aid, which is a charitable organization and is doing a tremendous job in the field of humanity, to make the people from this region aware how to minimise brain stroke cases,” said Dr Chakraborty.

“I want to make BTAD a stroke-free region,” he said urging the local NGOs and the district administrations of BTAD to work hand-in-hand to prevent brain stroke. He added, “For this, everyone must unite so that this area can be turned into a brain stroke-free region.”

The main purpose of organizing the workshop was to make people aware how to prevent brain stroke and also to make people aware about diet control and other health problems.

As high rates of brain stroke cases are registered from the BTAD area as well as the State, cases of hyper tension, high blood pressure, anxiety, diabetes and kidney failure are major problems in this region.

The workshop and the free medical camp were aimed at preventing and minimizing the rates of brain stroke and other neurological problems in presence of neurologist Dr Chakraborty.

The patients, who attended the free medical camp on Sunday, were suffering from hypertension, high blood pressure, brain stroke and other spinal problems and they came from different corners of the region.

The president of The Peoples Aid, Nava Kumar Basumatary said, “It is our privilege to have renowned neurologist Dr Malays Chakraborty with us and we welcome him for his selfless efforts to minimise brain stroke in BTAD region.”

He also said, “The People’s Aid has been working for the underprivileged people in health, education and livelihood sectors.”

Basumatary appealed Dr Chakraborty to set up a preliminary referral centre at Kokrajhar so that the patients don’t need to travel far and to conduct such kind of medical camp on monthly basis.

He also urged the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) administration and the citizens of the area to extend their support for this noble cause.
