Inspired by Padman, Kamal Jalan, a partner in Gorajan Tea Estate of Titabar in Jorhat district distributed 200 packets of sanitary napkins among adolescent girls and women workers of the tea garden on Saturday.

“I watched the movie on Valentine’s Day with my wife Sheetal and this is my Valentine gift to her,” said Jalan.

Jalan also said that the tea garden women labourers were still very backward and hygiene was not uppermost. “This is something which I will continue,” he further said.

Jalan further said that this was the least that he could have done to help the adolescent girls and women workers of the tea garden.

“I was influenced by the role of Akshay Kumar as Lakshmi Kant and his struggle to make the pads affordable and instill hygiene among the village women. This is something which exists here still today and Lakshmi Kant Chauhan or the real life innovator Arunachalam Murugunantham have not been heard of here,” he added.

The napkins were distributed during an awareness meeting which was attended by Titabar Sub-Divisional Officer (civil) Kamaljit Talukdar, Richa Agarwal, wife of Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Virender Mittal, ACMS Titabar secretary Nagen Kurmi among others.

Kurmi asked the women present on the occasion not to be shy or inhibited as this would only affect them adversely.

“Women should always come forward to discuss everything openly if they wanted to progress,” Kermit also said.
