As the family tree verification for the second phase of updating National Register of Citizens has started again, there are seven Indian states which have not sent back a single document which the Assam government had sent them for verification. In fact, the number of documents for the purpose of NRC verification sent back altogether is quite low as 1.6 lakh documents out of the 5.5 lakh documents were received till the publication of the first draft.

Chattisgarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshwadeep, Puducherry and Goa are the seven states which are yet to send back a single document.

As per official data, 114 documents were sent to Chattisgarh, 21 to Dadra and Nagar Haveli, 24 to Daman and Diu, 34 to Andaman and Nicobar Islands, 1 to Lakshwadeep, 7 to Puducherry and 182 to Goa.

Earlier, NRC coordinator Prateek Hazela had said that West Bengal had sent back only 5,852 out of 111,482 documents. Even after sending several reminders, the Mamata Banerjee government had failed to verify over lakhs of documents which is one of the reasons why name of many people were not included in the first draft.

Some of the states whose response to the Assam government was much better when it comes to clearing the backlog of documents due for verification are – Haryana (618 out of 1848 documents verified), Jammu & Kashmir (189 out of 332 documents verified), Sikkim (148 out of 500 documents verified), Punjab (508 out of 1465 documents verified), Kerala (102 out of 343 documents verified) and Rajasthan (8249 out of 14, 982 documents verified).

Errors committed during the submission of documents related to family tree in the first phase will be rechecked and corrected in the second round of verification. Errors like names, spellings, surname changes because of marriages, entry of wrong names will be rectified before the second draft of the NRC is released.
