Appointment of a new Director General of Police (DGP) is likely to take some time as the State Security Commission (SCC) is unable to have a meeting to discuss the issue though the present DGP, SB Singh will retire soon.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday told media persons that the SSC is yet to hold its sitting as the Commission is yet to have a member from the High Court.

“We have written a letter to the Meghalaya High Court requesting for a name from its side to be included in the SSC as it is a procedure that needs to be followed,” he said.

The SSC cannot sit because there are some members that need to be appointed.

The Chief Minister is the chairman of the SSC while Leader of Opposition, Home Minister and DGP as its ex-officio members.

“The process for inclusion of other members in the SCC is on, and once it is done, the SSC will meet to discuss the issue (selection of new DGP),” he said.

Stating that the commission is running out of time, the chief minister said the matter was being taken on a war footing to ensure that a new DGP is appointed without delay.

The present DGP, SB Singh is due to retire by the end of this month.
