In a day-long stakeholders’ workshop on ‘Revision of State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC version II) held in Imphal on Monday, the Director of Environment Department, Dr Y Nabachandra, highlighted the agreement of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris which aimed at limiting global warming to less than 2 degree Celsius and pursue efforts to limit the rise to 1.5 degree Celsius.

The stakeholders’ workshop was held under the aegis of the State Environment Department in association with the Swiss agency for Development and Cooperation, SDC, here on Monday.

Dr Y Nabachandra stressed on bringing out the second version of the SAPCC by revising the existing SAPCC 2013 which requires revision as per national commitments under Intended nationally determined contribution with the involvement of 22 government departments.

Apart from Nabachandra, Managing Director Dr Ashok Singha of CTRAN, a Bhubaneshwar-based consultancy, Prof Rabindranath of Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, Dr Anamika Barua of IIT-Guwahati were also present at the workshop as presidium members.

In the technical session, Prof Ravindranath shared his viewpoints based certain scientific data and experiences on climate change projections, impacts, vulnerability and adaptation assessment.

Stating that climate change is global phenomenon, the author of four books on climate change and member of the UNFCC expert panel on Kyoto protocol also informed that global deforestation will contribute to the climate change even though deforestation in Manipur may not give much impact to it.

Dr Ashok Singha of CTRAN said that the climate change impact will increase invasive species, insects and pests besides losing bio-diversity while plants will move upward movement with the rise in temperature.

Dr Anamika Barua of IIT-Guwahati also spoke on the climate change vulnerability assessment in North Eastern Region in the day’s workshop.

Earlier, in his keynote, Dr T Brajakumar, key officer of the State Climate Cell of the department, said, “We should align with the line departments so that we can have additional budget for the implementation of the relevant projects in the State.”
