Venkatesan being felicitated by Ramakrishnan.

National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) chairman M Venkatesan on Tuesday urged the Nagaland government to look after the welfare of the safai karamcharis across the state.

Venkatesan held a meeting with state government officials at the Nagaland civil secretariat conference hall in Kohima.

He said there are various schemes and programmes in place initiated by the Government of India for the benefit of safai karamcharis and their families. He said it was observed that most of the sanitation workers across that state are not aware of the various schemes provided by the Centre and added that it was necessary that the workers are made aware and educated so that they can avail the benefits.

“The state government machinery should work towards creating awareness so that the targeted beneficiaries avail the benefits,” he stressed.

Calling on the state government to take examples of success stories of other states in the country, Venkatesan acknowledged the services of the medical personnel, police, other state government officials and the safai karamcharis for their sacrifice made during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Interacting with safai karamcharis of Dimapur at the Dimapur deputy commissioner’s office on Monday, Venkatesan urged them to voice out their grievances and problems. He also appealed to the state government to set up State Commission for Safai Karamcharis.

“Every state will have different issues and that’s why I have come to Nagaland,” he said.

Venkatesan said he noted the problems being faced by the safai karamcharis during his tour of nine states after taking over the chairmanship of the commission seven months ago.
