North police station Kohima.

A police station in Nagaland added another feather to the state’s police cap by becoming the first police station/government office in the state to have been awarded International Standard Organisation (ISO) 9001 certification.

“Kohima North Police Station has become the first police station/ government office in Nagaland to receive the ISO 9001:2015 certification for a quality management system,” Kohima SP Manoj Kumar told reporters on Thursday.

Established as the first police station under the erstwhile Naga Hills district by the British regime in 1933, the police station has been awarded the ISO certification in recognition of its meeting the specified parameters of the quality management system on policing.

The police station is located in the heart of Kohima town and headed by an inspector rank officer-in-charge and 88 other ranks.

The process of certification was completed within a span of 30 days. The process was completed through online application, process, upgradation, documentation and online auditing.

Kumar congratulated the sub-divisional police officer (North), M. Yambemo Humtsoe and officer-in-charge of North Police Station Chubaonen on being able to complete the process for ISO certification.

He said the Kohima police had initiated the process of certification by upgrading the existing facilities and adding additional elements with the sole objective to improve the quality of public service and make the police station more people-friendly and accessible.

To meet the specified parameters, the police station has streamlined the process of character/passport verifications and the system of filing and record keeping.

Besides other measures, the infrastructure of the police station was upgraded and the disposal of various complaints has been made time-bound.

The police station has a reception desk, para legal volunteers help desk, separate interrogation-cum-investigation room, separate space for visitors, clean drinking water facility and several other visitor-friendly amenities.

Kumar the initiative was started with an objective to provide quality services to the people and make it quality control in service delivery in the future.

Kumar hoped the up-gradation would positively result in better service delivery to the public and uplift the level of proficiency in police administration.

He added that the ISO certification has helped ensure that the police personnel routinely evaluate their work and implement remedial measures, as and when required.

ISO 9001 is the international standard that specifies requirements for a quality management system.

Organizations use the standard to demonstrate the ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements.

It is the most popular standard in the ISO 9000 series and the only standard in the series to which organizations can certify.
