Altogether 68 permanent female sterilization and insertions of 30 intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCDs), commonly known as copper-T, were carried out in community health centres and primary health centres in Dimapur district.

The sterilization was carried out as part of the Population Stabilisation Fortnight observed from July 11-24.

IUCD is a temporary method of female sterilization.

Along with the fight against COVID19 pandemic, the Population Stabilisation Fortnight was observed in the district on the theme “Preparation for family planning even in times of disaster; full responsibility of competent nation and family”.

During the two-week observation, family planning activities such as permanent female sterilization, temporary sterilization, distribution of condoms and contraceptive pills, inter-personal communications and distribution of information, education and communication (IEC) materials were carried out throughout the district.

Laparoscopic tubal ligation sterilization, a permanent method of the female sterilization procedure, was conducted at Medziphema community health centre and at the urban primary health centre at Duncan Bosti and the district hospital during the fortnight.

While 163 oral contraceptive pills and 1,200 condoms were distributed during the fortnight, the auxiliary nurse midwives, ASHAs and IEC staff carried out the inter-personal communication in the form of focus group discussion and one-on-one counselling.
