The ‘Metha Thinuo Krotho’, a traditional body of the Metha clan in Dimapur in Nagaland has elected Khrienuo Metha as its first female president.
This is a welcome change in the hugely male-dominated Naga society.
Khrienuo Metha is a retired bureaucrat who headed various departments in Nagaland.
“The traditional body electing a woman as its head sends out such a strong message. We cannot undermine the fact that this decision directly challenges traditional attitudes,” a report Abu Metha, advisor to Nagaland chief minister.
“We have to challenge and change our thought process and archival attitudes if we are to progress as a society,” he said.

Khrienuo said, “I am very grateful that my clan has entrusted such a responsible position to me. I am still in the process of understanding my new responsibilities.”
Rosemary Dzüvichü, advisor of Naga Mothers Association and head of women studies in Nagaland University termed the Metha clan progressive for selecting a woman as its head.
She said that Khrienuo was a successful bureaucrat and possessed leadership qualities.
