Lenien Jamir will be the first-ever tennis player from Nagaland to be joining a US university to play in the US Collegiate Tennis circuit.

Nagaland woman tennis player Lenien Jamir has been selected for Athletic Scholarship offered by a US University.

The women’s tennis team of Monmouth University, New Jersey in the United States has chosen Lenien for this prestigious athletic scholarship.

Lenien will be the first-ever tennis player from Nagaland to be joining a US university to play in the US Collegiate Tennis circuit.

She has gained huge experience and exposure in the tennis circuit and has won numerous championships in national and international ranked tournaments across India, as well as, in other Asian and African nations.

Lenien underwent training under the All Assam Tennis Association (AATA) when she was a child.

Jamir attributed her success to the support and encouragement of her parents and also of her former school Faculty High School in Guwahati which always accommodated her crazy schedules thus helping her manage her studies.

Lenien, especially mentioned her Coach Bedanta Buragohain, who has been her constant support since she played the Under 12 tournaments.

She said that Coach Buragohain along with Coach Rupam Boro gave her the kind of training that could equal the best academies in India.

Lenien is now all set to play for Monmouth University where, because of her academic excellence too, she was given an academic scholarship.

She has got admitted as an under-grad student majoring in International Relations in the university’s Honors College.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, she delayed her departure from August 2020 and will be in the US in January next year.
