Dimapur: Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton, who also holds the home portfolio, on Monday (September 9, 2024) said the district administration, police, and other state and central agencies are on a high alert and taking necessary steps to prevent influx of illegal immigrants into the state.
Addressing a meeting on illegal migrants with the civil society organisations (CSOs) in Chumoukedima police complex, Patton spoke on the steps being taken by the Nagaland government to check inflow of suspected illegal immigrants.
Clarifying a viral video of passengers disembarking from a train on platform no. 2 of Dimapur railway station, he said both police and the administration swung into action immediately.
“As an immediate follow-up, three counters were set up at the railway station covering all exit routes to check suspected illegal immigrants from among the travellers deboarding at Dimapur,” he said.
The minister said checking at the railway station has been ongoing for the past three months.
“At present, on arrival passengers have to pass through detection counters set up at the three exit gates for identification. Nine CCTVs monitor the area in and around platform no. 1 of the railway station,” he added.

He asserted that all efforts have been made to maximise the coverage of passengers to eliminate any illegal immigrant influx.
“Enhanced monitoring has been initiated in eight different inter-state check gates in the state. There is strengthened monitoring with random checking being carried out at inter-state check gates and other vulnerable locations,” he said.
Patton said the DCs of eight border districts in Nagaland are in constant touch with their Assam counterparts for exchange of information on illegal immigrants while ILP drives to identify defaulters have been intensified by the district administration and the police.
“In between January and September 9 this year, over 200 defaulters have been identified and 50 arrests made. Flash mobile vehicle check posts at more than 250 checkpoints are being carried out by the state police for detection of criminal activities and influx of illegal immigrants, he added.
Patton appealed to all CSOs to remain calm and help the government agencies in curbing spread of rumours.
He urged the organisations to report to the authorities if any abnormal influx is seen in either the colonies or the villages.
