It was a celebration of motherhood on Saturday at the Frederick and Mary Downs auditorium of Eastern Theological College at Assam’s Jorhat.
The newly-formed YWCA-GIF began their activities here by celebrating Mother’s Day which is celebrated worldwide, every second Sunday of May.
Sanchita Hiwale, President of the Jorhat chapter of YWCA-GIF stated that the objectives of the organisation which took up many women and children related works like empowerment, teaching the poor and also works which bettered the social environment.
“Mother’s Day is a celebration of being a mother and defines the essence of being a woman. A mother has the responsibility of bringing up a child and moulding its character so that he grows up to be a good citizen,” she said.
Quoting Jawaharlal Nehru who had said: ‘Give me an educated mother and I will give you an educated society and an educated nation’, the chairperson of Springdale School, Shehnaz Ahmed stressed on education as being most important for all mothers as this was the basis on which a society and nation could progress.
She further said that at the feet of a mother lies heaven and the father was the path to those feet. “All mothers are great and you have given birth to beautiful children and it is up to you to make them great leaders,” she said.
Another speaker Mridula Brown, founder Principal of Francis Memorial English School said that a mother was the epitome of love, patience, sacrifice and a child’s first teacher.
Speaker on the theme, ‘Virtuous mother’ was Manjula Dutta, Principal, Christ King School.
The leader of the programme was Anita Singha and the Bible readers were Radhika Christopher and Julie Hazarika.
Prayers, hymns, reading of short passages from the Bible and a cultural programme marked the evening at the auditorium which was filled to the brim with parents and children mostly of the Francis Memorial English School.
Children of the school and of the YMCA Music School enthralled the audiences with their performances.
