Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday was of the opinion that mobile phones are responsible for the decadence of academic atmosphere in today’s world.

“Students waste precious and quality study time as they remain glued to their mobile handsets most of the time,” Sonowal said while addressing the state level Teachers’ Day programme at Srimanta Shankardev International Stadium of Kalakshetra in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Sonowal further appealed to the teachers of the State to have patience as the State Government is working out modalities to address all the problems faced by the teachers of the State.

“We sincerely desire to work out solutions to the problems faced by the teachers of the State. But it will take some time. You have to be a little patient and bear with us,” Sonowal appealed to the teaching community of the State.

Sonowal further said, “Our Education Minister is having parleys with the officials in this regard. We get saddened when teachers resort to agitations and threaten to commit mass suicide.”

Sonowal was speaking as the chief guest of the function, while State Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya and State Minister of Education Pallav Lochan Das attended the programme as guest of honour and distinguished guest respectively.

As many as 23 proficient teachers from across the State were awarded with state awards that include nine primary teachers and 14 secondary teachers.

Among those teachers who were awarded with state awards include 10 teachers from Kamrup (Metro) district for exemplary dedication and service.
