A day after the Centre announced a reduction in Central Excise Duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10 (per litre) respectively, Mizoram also reduced prices of petrol and diesel on Thursday. 

On Thursday, petrol price in state capital Aizawl fell to Rs 101.30 per litre, cheaper by Rs 5.82 per litre while the diesel is now sold at Rs 86.37 per litre, a cut by Rs 11.52 per litre. 

This is a sharp drop from yesterday’s rate of Rs. 107.12 for petrol and Rs 97.89 per litre for diesel. 

The prices of extra premium fuel have dropped to Rs 104.94 per litre on Thursday from Rs 110.76 per litre on the previous day. 

Chief Minister Zoramthanga announced that his government reduced Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel each by Rs. 7 per litre with immediate effect from Thursday.

“Glad to announce the Mizoram Govt. will reduce VAT on petrol and diesel each by Rs 7 with immediate effect from today,” he tweeted. 

He said that the “progressive decision” made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi resulting in the reduction of excise duty on petrol and diesel was conveyed to the state government by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharam.   

A notification issued by the state taxation department on Thursday said that the tax rate of high-speed diesel has been reduced to 5.23 per cent per litre from the existing and 14.5 per cent per litre, while the tax rate for petrol was reduced to 16.36 per cent per litre from the existing 25 per cent.
