Over 200 teachers and students of Mizoram University (MZU) on Wednesday staged a peaceful demonstration in protest against the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) attack.
They expressed solidarity with the students and teachers of JNU, who were assaulted by a group of masked miscreants on January 5.
The demonstration was held in the university campus at Tanhril on the outskirts of Aizawl.
It was jointly organised by the Mizoram University Teachers’ Association (MIZUTA), Mizoram University Non-Teaching Employees’ Association (MUNTSA) and Mizoram University Students’ Council (MZUSC).
MIZUTA president Lalnilawma said, “The protest was just a peaceful demonstration to extend solidarity with the students and teachers of JNU, who were brutally assaulted by masked culprits.”
The associations also urged the authorities concerned to immediately identify the culprits and give them stringent punishment, Lalnilawma said.
The three organisations of Mizoram University issued a joint statement and strongly condemned the violence at the JNU campus on January 5.

They asked the central government to bring the persons involved in the brutal attack to justice.
The statement also urged the authorities concerned to ensure all-time safety in the universities and places of higher learning all over the country.
Through the statement, the organizations also urged all the citizens concerned to refrain from unleashing violence in universities and institutes of higher learning and also from intellectual disintegration.

At least 35 people were injured when a masked mob entered the JNU campus on January 5 evening and attacked the teachers and left-leaning students of the university.
The injured students and teachers were admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and later discharged on recovery.

Meanwhile, Delhi police have identified a masked woman seen in videos of the January 5 attack on JNU students and faculty members as Komal Sharma, a Delhi University student affiliated to the ABVP.
Many students and faculty members, who were attacked on January 5 alleged that the ‘masked goons’ were ABVP members.
