Mizoram Assam: Heroin worth Rs 10 lakh seized in Tinsukia

AIZAWL: Mizoram Police and  Excise and Narcotics Department have seized over 93 kilograms of heroin in the past eight months.

According to police and excise officials, 409.4 kilograms of Methamphetamine tablets and 732 kilograms of ganja (cannabis) were also seized during the same period.

The state police alone seized 59.2 kg of heroin worth Rs. 17.77 crore between January and August.

During the same period, the state police seized 285.9 kg of Methamphetamine tablets worth Rs. 37.18 crore and 35 kg of crystal meth worth Rs. 105.46 crore.

Last week at least eight people, two of them from Assam and one from Manipur were arrested for possessing heroin and ganja (cannabis) in three separate operations in Aizawl on Thursday.

Excise officials and personnel of Assam Rifles launched a joint operation at the Falkland area in Aizawl on Thursday night and seized 220 grams of heroin from the possession of four persons.

Two of the four accused hailed from Assam’s Cachar district, while one each from Manipur’s Pherzawl district and Aizawl, he said.

Officials of the excise department and volunteers of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) also seized 105 kilograms of ganja (cannabis) in two separate operations in Aizawl on Thursday, he said.

An official said that four persons, all residents of Mizoram, were arrested in connection with the seizure of ganja.

The ganja were smuggled from Meghalaya and Tripura, he said.

He said that the use of ganja is increasing among youths these days.

All the eight accused were booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and they were produced before the judge of special court (ND&PS Act) on Thursday and Friday, he added.
