Mizoram’s apex student body, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) will observe a candlelight vigil to pay tributes to those killed in anti-coup protests in Myanmar, an MZP leader said on Tuesday.
MZP president B. Vanlaltana said that the event will be organised in different parts of the state at 7:30 pm on Tuesday.
“A candlelight vigil will be observed in different parts of the state to mourn and pay tribute to the innocent people, who have been killed in the pro-democracy movement in Myanmar after the military junta had power in the neighbouring country,” Vanlaltana said.
He said that the MZP will also organise a mobile music concert to raise money for the Myanmar nationals, who have taken refuge in Mizoram fleeing the military regime in their country.
The crowdfunding programme will be organised across the state capital Aizawl on March 20, he said.
According to MZP president, the meeting of extended office bearers and advisers of the student organisation on Monday found it difficult to ignore the sufferings of the Zo ethnic people (Zohnahthlak) in Myanmar due to the present political situation.
The meeting decided to extend humanitarian assistance and relief to the Myanmar nationals, who crossed over to Mizoram to take refuge in the state due to the military coup, he said.
Six Mizoram districts share a 510 km long international border with Myanmar’s Chin state.
Mizoram is already home to thousands of Chin communities, who share the same ancestry with the Mizos of Mizoram.
Earlier on Monday, a state home department official said that at least 383 people from Myanmar have crossed Mizoram to take refuge after the military coup in the neighbouring country on February 1.
