Mizoram’s two political parties – Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC) and PRISM (People’s Representatives for Identity and Status of Mizoram) – on Tuesday merged to revive a defunct political party, People’s Conference.

The merger of the two parties took place at a programme held at the MPC office at the Treasury Square in Aizawl.

The presidents of the two parties – Lalhmangaiha Sailo (of the MPC) and Vanlalruata (of the PRISM) – signed a merger agreement on the occasion.

Two party presidents accused the past and present governments of failing on all fronts, and urged the people to make the right decision in the next election.

The new party elected Lalhmangaiha Sailo as its president.

PRISM president Vanlalruata will be the senior vice president, while Lalrinzuala Chawngthu from the PRISM and V Lalthazuala will be the vice presidents.

The PRISM was formerly an anti-corruption organisation which became a political party before the 2018 State Assembly elections.

It fielded 14 candidates in the elections in which each candidate lost their security deposit.

The MPC is an offspring of the People’s Conference, founded by late chief minister Brig T Sailo in 1975.

It won the elections in 1976 and 1977. After the Brig T Sailo government was dethroned in 1984, it had remained in the Opposition.

It was rechristened as the Mizoram People’s Conference in the early 1990s.
