Joining the nationwide “SpeakUpIndia” campaign launched by the party at the centre, Mizoram Congress on Thursday demanded the immediate release of Rs 10,000 each to all the poor families in the country.

In a video message, state Congress president and former Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla alleged that the Mizo National Front (MNF) government headed by CM Zoramthanga has failed miserably in finance management.

“The need of the hour is financial assistance. People in need must be addressed to by the Centre,” he said.

He said that the Centre should provide financial assistance, not loads, to small business so that the middle class has money in their hands.

The Congress leader also demanded that transport be made available for all migrant workers without charge to ensure their safe return home.

Besides, employment opportunities should be provided to migrant workers and poor working classes and working days under MNREGA should be increased to 200 days in a year in view of the pending economic slowdown due to the global pandemic.

Meanwhile, the young wing of Congress on Thursday demanded the state government make public the enquiry report on the alleged stashing of public money by an official.

A statement issued by the Congress youth said that 8 months have elapsed since the Lokayukta ordered the state Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) to initiate a preliminary investigation into the case and submit a report within a month.

The party accused the government of chaining up the investigating agency to act.

On April 26 last year, the Congress youth wing had filed a complaint with state Lokayukta chairman against J. Lalhmingliana, principal consultant in the civil aviation wing of the general administration department for allegedly hoarding over Rs 1 crore in his bank account.

It said that stashing public money in the private account by an official is a serious matter as it contravenes financial rules and exposes outright corruption.

The Lokayukta chairman on May 4 had instructed the state’s anti-corruption bureau to initiate a preliminary probe against Lalhmingliana and submit its report within a month.
