At least 795 dwelling houses have been damaged by heavy rain, hailstorm and violent wind that hit several parts of Mizoram last week, disaster management and rehabilitation minister Lalchamliana said on Thursday.

He said 46 houses have been completely damaged and 749 others partially damaged in 58 villages across nine out of all 11 districts in the recent naturally calamities.

Lalchamliana, who is also the home minister, said the government would give all possible assistance to the victim families.

According to the minister, Hliappui village in east Mizoram’s Saitual district was the hardest hit of recent natural calamities as a total of 268 houses were damaged when the village was hit by massive hailstorm on April 23 last.

Of the 268 houses, 189 were completely damaged by hailstones, he said.

Hliappui villages falls under Lengteng Assembly constituency.

Lalchamliana said the government and local MLA L Thangmawia extended help to the victim families, who were provided with 688 bundles of tin sheet worth Rs 29.2 lakh.

Mizoram Synod and the rural development department also provided 200 and 100 bundles of tin sheet respectively, he said.

He thanked neighbouring villages for extending community service to Hliappui village to repair the damaged houses.

According to Lalchamliana, a total of 4,033 people, including  1,887 people from more than 14 neighbouring villages, had gathered at Hliappui for community service.

Official sources said at least 229 houses in Aizawl district, 271 in Saitual district, 76 in Lawngtlai district, 72 in Hnahthial district, 70 in Mamit district, 61 in Kolasib district, six in Khawzawl district and three each in Champhai and Siaha districts were damaged by heavy rain, hailstorm and violent wind that hit the State last week.
