AIZAWL: At least 42 people have died in calamities in Mizoram between March and May this year, officials said.
During the meeting of Mizoram State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) chaired by Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Monday, it was mentioned that a total of 5,938 houses and buildings have been destroyed due to natural disasters between March and May, they said.
Natural calamities also claimed 42 lives during the same period, they said.
Lalduhoma informed the meeting that the Inter-Ministerial Central team, which visited Mizoram in June, has submitted its report on the damages caused by Cyclone Remal.
He said that the report is currently under consideration by the Union Finance Ministry and expressed optimism about receiving substantial assistance from the Centre.
According to state disaster management and rehabilitation minister K. Sapdanga, the Mizoram government has sought financial assistance amounting to Rs 237 crore from the Centre to rehabilitate and repair the damages caused by landslides and rain that hit the state in May as a fallout of cyclone Remal.
34 people were killed when houses were swept away by landslides triggered by heavy rain in seven places in the state capital Aizawl region on May 28.
Officials said that temporary shelters were set up in the Hlimen area on the southern outskirts of Aizawl for 41 families from Hlimen and Melthum localities, who were affected by the recent landslides.
