Sitting Mizoram state Congress vice president and former finance minister Lalsawta will take over as the party new chief to replace Lal Thanhawla, a party leader said on Monday.
Congress secretary in charge of general administration department Lalthanglawra Ngurte said the meeting of elected office-bearers chaired by sitting president Lal Thanhawla on Monday reaffirmed the decision taken in October and unanimously agreed to appoint Lalsawta as the new president of the party.
Lalsawta will replace five-time former chief minister Lal Thanhawla, who headed the state Congress since 1973.
The meeting also unanimously approved former health minister Lal Thanzara, brother of Lal Thanhawla, to take the place of Lalsawta as the party vice president, Ngurte said.

Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Zodintluanga will be re-appointed as the party treasurer, he said.
According to the Congress leader, the appointments of new leaders would be officially announced by Lal Thanhawla in a function to be held on December 17.

Three-time MLA Lalsawta has taken over as the party vice president on March 8 this year to replace incumbent vice president H. Liansailova, who resigned in November last year citing personal engagement with church ministry.
Lalsawta had successfully contested the state Assembly polls three times in 1993, 2008 and 2013.
The 75-year-old Congress leader was a part of Lal Thanhawla’s cabinet during 2008-2013 and was the finance minister during 2013-2018.
