Mizoram home minister Lalchamliana on Wednesday opened the international paragliding accuracy championsip in Mizoram’s central Serchhip town, about 91 km from Aizawl.

The five-day event is being organized by Mizoram Aero-Sports Association (MASA) in collaboration with the state Sports and Tourism departments.

Lalchamliana said the event aims at promotion of tourism in the State.

The State Government has allocated Rs 50 lakh for the purpose while the North Eastern Council (NEC) has sanctioned Rs 20 lakh for the event which will conclude on Sunday.

Nearly 70 pilots (gliders) from different parts of India and abroad have registered for the championship, officials said.

However, seven gliders from China have cancelled their participation after they were refused to move out of their country due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

The National Aero-Club of India has deployed a 12-member technical team that includes a director from Macedonia, and two judges from Slovenia and Republic of Korea for the event.

The closing ceremony will be held on Saturday which will be graced by chief minister Zoramthanga.
