Smuggling of illegal goods has become a major cause of concern in Mizoram with the Serchhip Battalion of 23 sector Assam Rifles recovering129 grams of heroin from Beethel Veng in Champhai district.

A joint team of Assam Rifles, Assam Rifles Field Intelligence Unit (ARFIU) and Champhai district excise and narcotics department on Friday carried out the operation.

The approximate cost of the recovered heroin is estimated to be rupees 10 lakhs.

The excise and narcotics department also detained an individual in this connection.

In another joint operation, the Serchhip Battalion of Assam Rifles and Champhai district customs department recovered a huge quantity of smuggled areca nuts from Ngur-Zote in Mizoram’s Champhai district.

Based on specific inputs, a joint team of Assam Rifles and Champhai district customs department carried out the operation on December 3.

The approximate cost of the recovered areca nuts is estimated to be over rupees 76.83 lakh in the international market.

Officials of the customs department have detained six individuals reportedly involved with the smuggling of areca nuts.
