AIZAWL: Despite the declining rate of malaria death over the past few years, at least five people have died of the mosquito-borne disease between January and July this year in Mizoram, officials of the state health department said.

The officials said that 12,290 people contracted Malaria from January to July and 5 of them have succumbed to the mosquito-borne disease.

All the victims hailed from south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district, they said.

Of the 12,290 infected people, 6,349 tested positive for Malaria PF, they said. 

The National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) of Mizoram Health and Family Welfare Department on Tuesday held a meeting to review the status of Malaria, Dengue and Chikungunya infections in the state for seven months between January and July.

The meeting pointed out that Malaria PV cases have increased this year as compared to the previous years.

At least 267 people have contracted Dengue and 3 Chikungunya cases have been reported in the state since January, the meeting said.

The meeting also pointed out that Malaria cases are more common or high in four border districts- Lawngtlai, Lunglei, Mamit and Siaha, which share borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar.
