Mizoram government employees will cut salary for relief and in aid for the fight against COVID-19, official sources said on Tuesday.
Members of various associations of government employees of Mizoram held a meeting that was presided over by chief secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo.
In the meeting it decided that 10 per cent of basic pay will be cut for Group- A, B, C employees and 5 per cent of basic pay for Group- D employees.
The cut in salary will come into effect from May to December.
The meeting was attended by at least 75 associations of government employees.
Chuaungo brief the meeting about the unprecedented crisis face by the world due to the global outbreak of novel coronavirus.
Citing that the pandemic began impacting the global economy, he said it is not known how far it would affect the economy and impede development.
Chuaungo said that the state has also already begun to face an economic crisis because the quantum of fund received from the Centre has considerably declined.
“Even though Central funding has been considerably reduced, crore of rupees have to be spent in the fight against COVID-19 beyond the annual budget,” he said.
He urged all government employees to make collective efforts to fight the dreaded virus in view of the gradual economic slowdown.
