Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga on Wednesday said massive efforts are being made to upgrade Lengpui airport, the lone airport in the State.

He said resurfacing of the runway and repairing of road between landing area and terminal building is in progress during lockdown to ensure that Mizoram has good airport akin to those in other states.

The chief minister on Wednesday inspected the ongoing renovation of the airport.

Apart from the construction of side drain along runway, he also inspected the feasibility of putting more platforms inside airport terminal and construction of a restaurant and a park outside the terminal.

Airport Authority of India (AAI) handed over Rs 10 lakh to the chief minister as a contribution towards chief minister’s relief fund (CMRF) to fight COVID-19.

About 300 staffs of State Bank of India (SBI) in Mizoram and Horticulture Officers and Staff Welfare Association also donated Rs 7 lakh and Rs 8.3 lakh respectively towards CMRF on Wednesday.

Earlier, members of Mizoram Horticulture Service Association employed under state horticulture department had donated their one day salary amounting to Rs 2.5 lakh towards the CMRF to fight the novel coronavirus pandemic.
