AIZAWL: Opposition Congress on Tuesday slammed the Mizoram government over dilapidated conditions of roads across the state.

A statement issued by Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) alleged that several inter-state and intra-state roads, including the national highway 306, the lifeline of Mizoram, are in such poor condition that they are nearly non-pliable.

The statement said that in some places maxicabs stayed off the road and students staged processions to protest against the dilapidated condition of roads.

The Congress also blamed Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma for allegedly not honouring its promises.

It said that during the campaign trail for the 2023 assembly polls, Lalduhoma had repeatedly stated that roads will be in good condition and that they will be sustainable for a long time under the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) government if it comes to power in the assembly elections.

After winning the assembly polls, the ZPM assumed power in December last year.

“Although the ZPM government has enough time during winter, it neglected to repair roads during those days and those roads it has repaired are also sub-standard,” the Congress said in the statement.

It also asked the state PWD minister to immediately take steps and expedite repairing roads across the state.

On August 22, various vehicle owners and drivers associations in Kolasib staged a blockade on NH-306 preventing all vehicles from plying on the national highway within Kolasib district.

The NH-306 links Mizoram with Assam and is the lifeline of the state as all supplies come from outside on this road.

The blockade was called off the next day after the government and construction companies agreed to repair the deplorable sections of the roads within a specific time.
