Over 70 assistant professors employed under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), who have not been paid for many months, will be paid soon as the Centre has sanctioned over Rs 5.21 crore for salaries, sources said.

The teachers, who are working in various colleges, have not been paid since May as the Centre could not sanction money.

They were recruited in August 2019.

Massive efforts were taken by higher and technical education minister R. Lalthangliana, who put forward the matter several times before the Centre, the sources said.

“The Centre on Wednesday mailed a sanction order of over Rs. 5.21 crore for salary to the minister. The employees are likely to be paid in January next year,” it said.

Earlier, opposition Congress had blamed the state for unable to pay teachers.

The party alleged that more than 4,000 School teachers working under Samagra Mission and about 70 assistant professors under RUSA were not paid since many months as the state goverment failed to meet its matching share.

However, salaries of more than 4,000 employees under Samagra Shiksha were released before Christmas as the Centre had released sanction order on December 18.
