April 19:

The Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles has recovered 395 bags of areca nuts from Vaphai in Mizoram’s Champhai district.

The operation was conducted by a joint team of Assam Rifles and Champhai district custom preventive force in Vaphai on April 18.

An individual has also been detained for illegally possessing the contraband.

The team had swung into action after receiving information about the areca nuts that were reportedly stocked to be smuggled across the Indo-Myanmar international border in Mizoram.

The seized bags of areca nuts are estimated to be worth Rs 74,18,100.

Despite the routine operations conducted by Assam Rifles in collaboration with the Mizoram police and departments concerned, they have not succeeded in rooting out the growing problem of cross-border smuggling activities in Mizoram.
