Assam-Mizoram border dispute has taken a new turn with Mizoram police occupying a mosque in Assam land along the border.

The Bhairabi Halom Mosque at Kochurthol in Hailakandi district has been occupied by Mizoram police as a result Muslim people living in the area cannot go to the mosque and are deprived off performing their daily Namaj.

Visiting the mosque Karimganj south MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha expressed his anguish over the inaction of the state government in this regard. He smacked off political conspiracy behind the incident.

“The issue was raised in the Assembly. We have even requested to send House Committee to the spot. But government is not serious about it,” Purkayastha told Northeast Now.

“We have seen how BJP has grabbed power by forging alliance with regional parties in the recentlu concluded elections in three states. Here also they are in touch with a regional party in Mizoram so that they can grab power in the upcoming elections of Mizoram. An influential minister of our state for his own interest is doing this,” he added.

Recently, the border dispute between the two states has sparked off tensions in the area and Assam Police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the Mizo student body members. Even journalists were also mercilessly beaten by the police while covering the incident.
