While the Budget session recently approved funds for the establishment of three new districts amidst much jubilant celebration, a new district related demand has come to light in the state of Mizoram yet again.

Darlawn District Demand Committee met with the NGOs and political leaders over the weekend to push towards the creation of a new district.

For the same, four resolutions were passed at the meeting including the necessity to demand a new district in Darlawn for development of the area.

The people of these hills refuse to be under the area of Saitual district and they want to let the government know that if any action is taken leading to such results, they will protest it till the end, said the committee members.

“Looking at the geographical area of the state, Darlawn deserves to be a district headquarter.  We will strive till the end for a district,” they added.

The demand for creating Darlawn district has been staged since 1988. Darlawn is currently located in Aizawl district.

In April last year, over 3000 people hit the street in Darlawn town demanding the creation of new district.

The proposed Darlawn district comprises of 41 villages, more than 40,000 people and over 8,000 houses in three Assembly constituencies- Tuivawl, Chalfilh and Serlui  in the northeastern part of the state bordering Assam and Manipur. It covers 1500 sq km area.

In the Assembly session which concluded on Wednesday, Chief Minister Zoramthanga has allocated funds of Rs 150 lakhs each to establish three districts, Saitual, Khawzawl and Hnahthial in the interim Budget.

The district members and constituency MLAs had expressed their happiness with a group even gathering in front of the Mizoram Assembly House with a banner thanking the Chief Minister and the Mizoram government.

The Saitual Town Youth Organization (STYO) said they were happy to see their dream of over 40 years being achieved. “It is a great development and we are very thankful to the Mizoram Government,” they said.

Implementation of the new districts was the poll plank of the ruling MNF, which helped the party to sweep the Assembly polls in November last year.

Currently Saitual is located in Aizawl district, Hnathial in Lunglei district and Khawzawl in Champhai district.
