Aizawl: In a tragic incident, a 25-year-old man was killed while burning his jhum land. The incident occurred on March 15 about 20 km from Darlawn village in Aizawl district.

The victim Vanlalhriatpuia, a resident of Darlawn Venghlun, along with his two friends had gone to burn his jhum land on March 15.

The three have also planned to go fishing after burning the jhum land.

Vanlalhriatpuia left his mobile phone and other belongings to his friends as he was planning to return for fishing soon after burning the jhum land.

As Vanlalhriatpuia did not come back from his jhum to the designated place where the three were supposed to meet, his two friends had left for a river in the hope that Vanlalhriatpuia would join them soon.

When Vanlalhriatpuia did not come to the river even after the two friends had stayed for two nights, they believed that he must have already returned home.

On Sunday, when his two friends went to his home in the village to return Vanlalhriatpuia’s mobile phone and other belongings, they realised that he did not come back from the jhum.

Subsequently, family members and locals launched a search operation and recovered the half-decomposed body of Vanlalhriatpuia from a stream on Sunday evening.

He suffered burns on his face, shoulders and arms.

Vanlalhriatpuia was laid to rest on Monday.
