Guwahati: The Voice People’s Party (VPP) has formally requested that the Meghalaya government deny permission for the Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Bharat Yatra, scheduled for October 2.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, VPP General Secretary and Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon has expressed concerns over the potential repercussions of the event on communal harmony within the state.

“While we wholeheartedly support the constitutional right to freedom of religion, we are alarmed by the possible consequences this yatra may have on our state’s social cohesion,” Syngkon stated.

Syngkon further articulated worries that the yatra could cause divisions and disrupt the peaceful coexistence among Meghalaya’s diverse communities.

He added that the state’s rich social and cultural diversity must be preserved and that events which could undermine this balance should be avoided.

Highlighting that imposing specific beliefs on personal choices and lifestyles could pose a threat to societal unity, Syngkon reiterated the VPP’s position that such activities could harm Meghalaya’s longstanding tradition of peace and mutual respect.
