The Meghalaya Cabinet has decided to initiate a judicial inquiry into the ‘killing’ of former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Meghalaya cabinet held in Shillong on Monday.
“Cabinet has decided to constitute a judicial enquiry under the Commission of Enquiry Act to look into the events that occurred in the wee hours of August 13,” Meghalaya chief minister said after chairing the cabinet meeting.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya cabinet has also decided to constitute a peace committee which will be headed by deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong.

“A Peace Committee will be constituted, chaired by the Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong and ministers – H Dohling and R Tongkhar. The Committee will co-opt members from civil societies, religious organisations and community heads,” Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma said.
Meanwhile, a sub-committee for security and law and order will also be constituted, which will “look into aspects of law and order, possible future threats and overall functioning of Meghalaya Police”.
The sub-committee for security and law and order will be headed by CM Conrad Sangma, with deputy CM Prestone Tynsong and state home minister as members.
On the other hand, with incidents of vandalism and arson being reported from different parts of Shillong city, the Meghalaya Government has decided to extend the curfew till 5am of August 18. The ban on internet services has also been extended for 24 more hours.
