A memorandum has been prepared by the state education department for a cabinet decision for closing down over 200 lower and upper primary schools in the state enrolled with single-digit students.

Sources in the education department said that the cabinet memorandum has been prepared and it is ready as and when the state cabinet would take a call on this crucial issue.

“Students of such schools will be merged with nearby schools and teachers will be redeployed,” sources said.

Last year, education minister, Lahkmen Rymbui said that the state government planned to either shut down or withdraw funds to those schools having enrolments below 10 students.

He said that funds for such schools would be used for the development of other educational institutes.

He also said that the decision regarding the closure of schools or withdrawal of aid to them will be taken as per the guidelines of the Right to Education (RTE) Act and no student will be deprived.
