Scientists from Meghalaya have discovered a species of cicada in Nagaland.
This cicada species is the first indigenous to be discovered in Nagaland.
The scientists’ team are from the prestigious North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong.
Findings of the discovery was published in a study co-authored by Dr SR Hajong and Dr Limatemjen.
Dr SR Hajong an associate professor and an entomologist in NEHU’s Department of Zoology.
The paper was published in the taxonomy journal ‘Zootaxa’ on Tuesday.
“The study was part of a project funded by the Centre’s Department of Biotechnology under which, 70 cicada species from the Northeast were inventoried,” Hajong was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Cicadas are a superfamily, the Cicadoidea, of insects in the order Hemiptera (true bugs).
Cicadas have prominent eyes set wide apart, short antennae, and membranous front wings.
They have an exceptionally loud song, produced in most species by the rapid buckling and unbuckling of drumlike tymbals.
