Guwahati: Cabinet Minister Rakkam Sangma criticized proponents of beef ban as extremists and dismissed a planned cow vigilante rally in Shillong, Meghalaya on October 2 as “drama.”
Sangma’s remarks came as public sentiment grew in favour of the Meghalaya government denying permission for the “Gau Dhwaj Sthapana Bharat Yatra,” a stance already taken by the Nagaland government.

In response to queries about whether the Meghalaya government will ban the event, Sangma advised against creating unnecessary controversy.
“I urge them not to make a drama out of this. They can hold their program in other parts of the country,” Sangma told reporters.
Previously, Sangma had voiced his disapproval of the rally, criticizing its organizers as uninformed about the Constitution and the nation’s diversity.

He labelled them as “extremists” and rejected their attempts to dictate dietary choices.
“Beef has been part of diets historically, and no one should force me to stop eating a food I enjoy,” Sangma asserted, emphasizing that beef should not be associated with any religion.
