Three INSAS rifles of the Meghalaya Police, which were snatched by agitating youths from police personnel on August 15, have been recovered.
The three rifles were recovered by a team of Meghalaya fire and emergency services department, after an extensive search at the Umkhrah River in Shillong.
The search operation for the three rifles was conducted based on an anonymous letter that a local newspaper in Shillong and East Khasi Hills SP received.
The guns were recovered from below the Umpohliew bridge over the Umkhrah River in Shillong.

The letter, which is believed to have been written by an elderly person, had stated that he (the writer) and his friends had took the rifles from the ‘teenagers’ and threw it in the river.
“As elders we feared that these kids might misuse the guns. So, we took the guns from them threw them in the Umkhrah River,” the letter read.
