SHILLONG: Meghalaya deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong has stated that the law will address any illegal activities conducted by the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).
Meghalaya deputy CM Prestone Tynsong also appealed to the HNLC to return to the negotiation table for peace talks.
This statement follows the arrest of four HNLC members, who were apprehended for allegedly serving extortion notes and issuing threats.
Meghalaya police successfully dismantled the outfit’s sleeper cell in this operation.
“The law will take its own course not only for HNLC but anybody involved in any criminal activities,” the Meghalaya deputy chief minister stated.
He urged the HNLC to cease all criminal actions, adding, “My appeal to all concerned is to stop committing any illegal activities or criminal acts. Let us come forward, work with the government, and ensure the safety and growth of Meghalaya as a whole.”
Tynsong also encouraged citizens to report any illegal activities, saying, “We have clearly requested all citizens to inform the police immediately if they receive demand notes or threats in any form so that prompt action can be taken.”
When asked about the Meghalaya government’s stance, the deputy CM affirmed their firm position against any criminal activities.
“If members of the HNLC, under the direction of their leaders, engage in such acts, the law will take its own course as soon as we are aware of these activities,” he said.
Reiterating his call for peace talks, the Meghalaya deputy CM added, “I continue to appeal for negotiation and discussion across the table, as we have done before. The door for peace talks remains open for the members of the HNLC. I urge them to come back for talks and let us continue the dialogue we have already started.”
