Shillong: The Meghalaya Congress has initiated legal proceedings against three former MLAs who shifted to the National People’s Party (NPP).

The MLAs- Celestine Lyngdoh, Gabriel Wahlang, and Charles Marngar – defected to the National People’s Party (NPP) in August.

This move comes as the party faces internal turmoil and questions about its leadership.

Congress general secretary A Chella Kumar confirmed the legal action, stating that the party has already suspended the three MLAs and will take further action soon.

However, Kumar remained tight-lipped about the future of Meghalaya Congress president Vincent H Pala, whose term ended in August.

The party has faced significant setbacks in recent times including the loss of 12 MLAs to the Trinamool Congress in 2021 and the recent defection of five MLAs to other parties.

With only one MLA, Ronnie V Lyngdoh, remaining in the party, Congress leaders have called for Pala’s resignation, citing moral responsibility for the party’s decline.
