Guwahati: The Congress in Meghalaya may lose the post of Leader of Opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly due to its reduced strength.
With only one MLA remaining in the 60-member House, the party no longer meets the numerical criteria for the position.

Ronnie V Lyngdoh, the lone Congress MLA from Mylliem in Meghalaya, had been appointed Leader of Opposition on June 8.
However, the party’s strength has dwindled from five to one, paving the way for the Trinamool Congress, which has five MLAs, to claim the post.

The Vacant Gambegre seat, previously held by Saleng A Sangma who resigned to take up his role as MP of Tura, has further reduced Congress’s numbers.
The Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) with four MLAs is another opposition party in the Assembly.
