Guwahati: The Congress party has criticized the Voice of the People Party (VPP) for advocating the abolition of autonomous district councils (ADCs) in Meghalaya.

Lone Congress MLA Ronnie V Lyngdoh reminded the VPP that it was the Congress party that introduced the Sixth Schedule in the Northeastern states, which has protected the land, culture, and way of life of the indigenous population.

Lyngdoh dismissed the VPP’s stance as a misguided attempt to gain political mileage, emphasizing that the Sixth Schedule has become a cornerstone of Meghalaya’s identity.

He pointed out that other regions, such as Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh, are seeking to come under the Sixth Schedule’s ambit, highlighting its importance.

Regarding the upcoming district council polls, Lyngdoh acknowledged that the VPP may pose a challenge but emphasized that the Congress party’s legacy and commitment to the Sixth Schedule would ultimately prevail.

He expressed confidence that the people would recognize the Congress party’s contributions and reject the VPP’s “misguided” agenda.
