SHILLONG: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma declared on Tuesday (March 12) that stringent measures would be taken against those responsible for the IED bomb blast that shook Shillong on March 09 at Them Iew Mawlong.

“A significant number of individuals have been apprehended, and decisive action is underway. We are committed to ensuring that those accountable for this heinous act are brought to justice,” said Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma.

He highlighted the swift response of law enforcement, attributing it to a robust police intelligence network and the utilization of crime-solving technology.

“The police investigation is ongoing, and numerous arrests have been made. I have been receiving updates from police officials late into the night, and I am closely monitoring the situation,” Sangma remarked.

When questioned about the continuation of peace talks if the HNLC (Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council) is implicated in the blast, the Meghalaya chief minister emphasized the need for a thorough investigation before drawing conclusions.

“We must establish concrete evidence before making any official statements. While certain leads have been identified through our inquiries and intelligence, it is premature to comment until we have comprehensive details,” Sangma stated.

He added, “Extensive police operations are underway, and we are dedicated to apprehending those individuals and groups involved in such nefarious activities.”

On Sunday (March 10) night, two suspects, including an HNYF (Hynniewtrep National Youth Front) leader, were arrested by the Meghalaya police in connection with the IED bomb blast in Shillong.

Identified as Tarzan Lymba, the HNYF disciplinary secretary, and Ebakordor Nongpluh, they have been remanded to 10 days of police custody.

On Monday (March 11) night, the Meghalaya police apprehended four additional suspects in connection with the case.

The accused individuals were nabbed from Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya.

According to reports, the police in Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the East Khasi Hills police, conducted a joint operation resulting in the arrest of four individuals – two from Umsning and two from Nongpoh.

During the operation, a substantial amount of explosives was seized from their possession.

Information obtained from sources suggests that the arrested individuals were allegedly planning another bomb blast in Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi.

Authorities in Meghalaya have intensified efforts to locate and apprehend any remaining suspects believed to be associated with the blast.
