Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Meghalaya raised concerns about the state government’s decision to extend the terms of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) by six months.

M Kharkrang, Meghalaya BJP’s chief spokesperson, questioned the validity of the extension, stating that the government needs to “spell out what is the emergency or exigencies that warrant the extension.” He emphasized that extending the terms “on flimsy grounds” is unacceptable.

The extension comes after the delimitation committees responsible for redrawing constituency boundaries requested more time to complete their work.

However, Kharkrang expressed scepticism, noting that the committees were formed well in advance yet haven’t made significant progress.

He expressed concern that even after six months, the delimitation might not be finalized, leading to further extensions.

The BJP leader went further, suggesting ulterior motives behind the extension. “For anything, there has to be a political reason,” he stated, implying that even the delimitation exercise itself could be politically motivated.

Kharkrang urged the government to clarify the reasons behind the extension and address concerns about the potential for political influence in the delimitation process.
