Nine people have died in East Khasi Hills district either due to landslides/flash floods or washed away by strong waters of streams or rivers in the past one week.

Meghalaya government has announced immediate release of ex gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh each to next of kin of the recent landslides and flash flood victims of the state.

An ex- gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh each will be paid from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to the next of kin of deceased persons who lost their lives due to natural calamity, including those involved in relief operations or associated in preparedness activities, said an official.

East Khasi Hills district Deputy Commissioner on Monday night issued a statement informing that gratuitous relief in the form of ex-gratia payment to families of deceased persons is applicable for all cases of persons deceased due to natural calamity, including those involved in relief operations or associated in preparedness activity, subject to certification regarding cause of death from the appropriate authority.

The deputy commissioner said that the family/next of kin of people who have lost their lives during the recent natural calamities in East Khasi Hills district may approach  the  Office  of  the  Deputy  Commissioner,  East  Khasi  Hill District  (DDMA)  for claiming of ex-gratia payment as admissible under the norms.
