SHILLONG: Cyclone Remal has wreaked havoc across Meghalaya, resulting in one fatality and four injuries since the cyclone-induced rains began on May 26.

Fatal Incident in East Jaintia Hills

In a statement issued on Tuesday (May 28), M War, the executive director of the state disaster management authority, confirmed the tragic death caused by a wall collapse at Sutnga Weilong in the Wapung C&RD Block of East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.

The collapse not only claimed a life but also damaged a house.

Injuries and Hospitalization

A landslide at Mawkynroh Bypass under the Mawlai C&RD Block injured four people.

All injured individuals were swiftly transported to NEIGRIHMS hospital for medical attention.

Structural Damages in Shillong, Meghalaya

In Shillong, strong winds caused the light tower of JN Stadium, Polo, to collapse, police reported.

Additionally, minor damages to several houses were noted in East Khasi Hills. An uprooted tree near Last Stop bus shed in Shillong was promptly cleared by forest staff.

Multiple Landslides and Road Blockages

Several landslides occurred on May 28, causing significant disruptions:

  • Kench’s Trace near Rilbong Beat House: Blocked road and house damage.
  • Mawkynroh Bypass: Four injured individuals were shifted to NEIGRIHMS.
  • Tyrsad Road under Mawphlang Block: Completely blocked.
  • Lower Lumparing: House damaged.

Impact in West Garo Hills

Cyclonic activity in Rongkhon Agal village, Rongram Block in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya led to fallen trees, with restoration and clearing operations currently underway by the PWD (Road) and Forest Department.

Damages in South West Khasi Hills

On Monday, Cyclone Remal hit Mawten village in the Mawkyrwat C&RD Block, causing damage to one house.

Additionally, Dombah village in the Mawthadraishan C&RD Block experienced partial damage to a house due to the cyclonic storm.

Authorities are actively engaged in relief and restoration efforts to address the widespread damage caused by Cyclone Remal.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma, along with senior officials, reviewed the overall situation in view of Cyclone Remal, which has affected most parts of the state.

The Meghalaya chief minister has directed the administration to remain alert and be prepared to respond to any crisis.
