The Meghalaya government has faced flak for not coming up with any screening facilities in Garo Hills region of the state despite sharp increase of coronavirus cases in the country.

Residents of the Garo Hills say lack of screening facilities at the entry points to the region has posed serious threat to them of being infected by the deadly virus.

“Persons entering the Khasi Hills through Byrnihat are being screened, but in the Garo Hills, no screening facilities are available. People entering the entire without any hindrance,” said a resident of Resubelpara.

He alleged that no check gates or points of quarantine have been set up along the AMPT Road from Tikrikilla to Phulbari.

Last week, a resident of Tura raised an alarm that despite the severity of the pandemic, there is practically no checking along the NH-51.

“I came from the Guwahati airport where rigorous checking was conducted. But there is no such checking in the Garo Hills, which is shocking,” he said.
