Officers and all ranks of 6th Meghalaya Police battalion played the role of Good Samaritan by reaching out to poor tribal villagers with blankets to guarantee ‘little comfort’ as winter has started to set in.
Lakador Syiem, commandant of the 6th Meghalaya Police battalion at Umran said they decided to extend little help to the poor and needy people of the nearby villages amid COVID19 pandemic.
The officers and the other ranks of 6th Meghalaya Police battalion contributed money to buy blankets for distribution to the poor villagers.
During the run up to Christmas, and keeping in mind the prevailing economic impact of COVID19 pandemic, they decided to distribute blankets to the poor families in and around Umran in Ri Bhoi district.
On Tuesday, the 6th Meghalaya Police battalion launched its campaign – ‘Reaching Out – Beyond the Call of Duty’.
“We started by donating 50 blankets to the most needy members of Umran Niangbyrnai village, who were identified by the Dorbar Shnong,” Syiem said.
The campaign ‘Reaching Out – Beyond the Call of Duty’ will continue in the coming weeks in the villages around Umran.
The 6th Meghalaya Police battalion will continue to donate 50 blankets to the needy people identified by the VDPs and Dorbar Shnongs in each village.
“We have received contributions from our personnel and well wishers, and hope to gift 500 blankets during the run up to Christmas,” Syiem said.
The Meghalaya Police battalion is hopeful of distributing about 900 blankets to the poor people.
“We are grateful to our police personnel, deputy commissioner of Ri-Bhoi, friends, well wishers, donors and all those who supported us in this initiative of Reaching Out – Beyond the Call of Duty,” Syiem said.
Earlier, the 6th Meghalaya Police battalion has given gifts to children’s homes and some poor people who faced hardships during the pandemic.
