The Meghalaya government on Monday observed the World Youth Skills Day and announced that it would send to Japan 60 youths with technical background for skills training.
The World Youth Skills Day was organised by the Labour Department in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Skills Development Society (MSSDS) under the umbrella of ‘Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya’ assisted by ADB at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong.
Deputy chief minister in-charge of labour, Prestone Tynsong in his address said that the aim of skills training was to enable the youth to hone one’s skill and explore employment options and opportunities in various sectors and to not only depend on white collared jobs.
He urged the trainers to extend all possible help to the trainees in order to get them established in life.
The deputy chief minister along with other dignitaries released the skill brochures and distributed certificates to the trainees who have completed their various skills training programmes.
Principal secretary (labour) and CEO of Meghalaya State Skills Development Society, D. P. Wahlang said that under the ‘Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya’ many attractive skill training programmes are being offered for the youth of the state to help them get employment.
He said that the target of the state government was to train between 25,000 and 30,000 youth in the next one year and under the ‘Technical Intern Training Programme (TITP)’ the state government would send 60 trainees with technical background to be trained in Japan and they would also get the chance to work there.
“If there is good response, we will increase the seats. The training programme is free of cost as the government will bear all the expenses,” he informed.
He also informed that a skill training ‘manage service operate programme’ will commence from next month to help the youth assess the feasibility of all trades.
As part of the celebration, skill training providers of various government sponsored programmes set up stalls at the venue to enable the youth to obtain information on various sectors like hospitality, fashion designing, IT, information technology enabled services, healthcare, general duty assistant, security guard, plumbing, welding and painting, integrated farming, pottery, handloom and weaving and others.
Meghalaya State Skills Development Society executive director B. Hajong, labour commissioner, B. Mawlong and other officers were also present.
